After graduating with a medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1964, Professor Becker completed her residency at Red Cross Children's Hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital, both in Cape Town. She completed her fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1976. Professor Becker works in clinical care and researches juvenile diabetes. Her goal is to prevent diabetes and its complications.

Professor Becker has received numerous awards throughout her career. She received a scientific achievement award fromthe International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes in 2008 and has featured numerous times in the
Woodward/White, Inc. ‘Best Doctors in America’ directory of outstanding medical care, most recently in 2009-2010. She
has also featured on the Editorial Board of various journals, including Diabetes Care, Pediatric Diabetes and Diabetes, and has published extensively in many major diabetes journals.
