Challenges associated with exercise in type 1 diabetes

The health benefits of exercise are well established and include a significant reduction in risk of a variety of diseases, such as coronary heart disease and stroke, colon and breast cancer, osteoporotic fractures and dementia, as well as psychological benefits, including a reduced risk of depression. It is therefore not surprising that most specialist groups involved in the management of people with type 1 diabetes recommend that individuals engage in regular exercise as an integral part of their lifestyle.
