Adding insulin to oral therapy in type 2 diabetes is standard practice when oral agents are failing to control glycemia, but this increases the risk of hypoglycemia. This article reviews three recent publications that highlight the use of basal insulin analogues in type 2 diabetes, and their benefits in terms of reducing hypoglycemia.
